AKRF Helps with Homes for Homeless and Disabled Veterans
About Us
A groundbreaking ceremony took place October 27, 2011 for the Homes for Heroes project in the Village of Tappan in Rockland County, New York. As seen on ABC 7 Eyewitness News, the event was attended by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, Town and County officials, veterans, and other supporters of the project, along with Nanette Bourne, Marc Godick, and Chris Robbins from AKRF.
Homes for Heroes was conceived by U.S. Marine Veteran and Rockland County legislator John Murphy. The Homes for Heroes project will develop housing for disabled and displaced veterans, with the goal of building 52 units. The Homes for Heroes site was a part of Camp Shanks where 1.3 million US troops were housed before they headed to combat and service in Europe and North Africa between 1943 and 1946. The site was also the stepping off point for troops who joined in the D-Day invasion at Normandy.
AKRF has been involved in developing the conceptual design, land use approvals, site engineering, and environmental management for the project.
