Phase I assessments identify
potential sources of contamination through interviews,
historical land use evaluations, and a review
of regulatory information. This helps understand
potential environmental liabilities associated
with site acquisition or redevelopment. |

This investigation (often
completed following the Phase I Assessment) further
evaluates potential liabilities. It may include
a geophysical survey to locate buried objects
(e.g., tanks or drums), subsurface soil and/or
groundwater sampling, and asbestos and/or lead-based
paint sampling. |

Brownfields are properties where
the known or potential presence of contamination complicates
the site's redevelopment. Many states have established formal
Voluntary or Brownfield Cleanup Programs (VCPs or BCPs), which
typically afford financial incentives, more flexible cleanup
standards, and liability protection. However, not all brownfield
sites are cleaned up under formal BCPs, and may instead follow
state or local storage tank or spill programs. |

AKRF is experienced in working
with project architects/engineers in enhancing
the design of the foundation vapor barriers, waterproofing,
and/or drainage systems often required for redevelopment.
Other services include asbestos abatement, management
of soil and/or tank removal, vapor mitigation
system design, and groundwater management. More
sophisticated measures can include soil venting,
air sparging, hydraulic barriers, and bioremediation. |

Construction dewatering often
requires treatment to remove contaminants, including
sediment, metals, and organic compounds (e.g.,
petroleum or solvents), prior to discharging the
water to the sewer system. AKRF is experienced
in completing system design, permitting, and equipment
procurement, set-up, and monitoring. |

AKRF offers technical support
during implementation of the remedial design.
This includes preparation of specifications, bid
review, permitting, health and safety plan preparation,
construction oversight, air monitoring, waste
management, and remediation system operation,
maintenance, and monitoring. |

and implementing strategies to comply with stormwater
regulations. This work includes the preparation
of erosion and sediment control plans, Stormwater
Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs), and permit
applications. AKRF also provides construction
monitoring and training for site personnel to
comply with inspection, maintenance, and recordkeeping
requirements. |

AKRF offers comprehensive
asbestos and lead-based paint management services,
including surveys, preparation of abatement specifications
and cost estimates, development of operation and
maintenance plans, and abatement oversight and
monitoring. AKRF also has the capability to perform
a wide variety of indoor air quality investigations,
including site assessments and surveys, personnel
monitoring, abatement design and implementation,
and operation and maintenance programs. |

AKRF is experienced in evaluating
alternatives and design for removal, upgrade,
or replacement of storage tank systems. Related
services include the development of bid specifications,
bid solicitation and review, equipment procurement,
permitting, construction oversight, registration,
preparation of Spill Prevention Control Countermeasure
(SPCC) plans, training, and recordkeeping. SPCC
plans are required for all facilities with total
aboveground petroleum storage capacity exceeding
1,320 gallons.
AKRF provides support in evaluating the compliance
status of petroleum and chemical storage tank
systems, and can perform the required inspections
and related recordkeeping or train building personnel
to conduct these tasks. |
