PSEG Estuary Enhancement Program, Salem, NJ
Large areas of the Delaware Estuary have been diked for salt-hay farming or overrun with non-native, invasive Phragmites—an 8- to 16-foot-tall reed that chokes out native grasses. These degraded areas prevented fish access to the natural marsh plain and negatively impacted the ecology of the salt marsh. For the past 10 years, AKRF personnel have been responsible for obtaining more than 200 federal, state and local permits required for the implementation of the program. The firm’s current responsibilities include coordination of all regulatory aspects of the program including permit procurement, permit compliance, and permit closeout. AKRF staff have continued to provide oversight of the regulatory program, with ongoing responsibility for ensuring that all permit conditions associated with local, state, and federal permits are adhered to, and are responsible for the annual preparation of compliance reports and status updates for each of the restoration projects. AKRF continues to work closely with environmental groups, advocates and adversaries to provide periodic updates on the status of the restoration project.
