Brooklyn Bridge Park—Natural Resources, Brooklyn, NY
The plans for Brooklyn Bridge Park would allow public access to the water’s edge and its spectacular views, and provide passive and active recreation, including open space, pavilions, an amphitheater for informal events, and a marina, and calls for converting historic and other vacant and underdeveloped industrial and commercial buildings to mixed uses. Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation recently hired AKRF to provide environmental and planning services for a new 85-acre park. The firm evaluated the potential impacts of waterfront activities on water quality, and aquatic habitats and species. Environmental issues that need to be addressed are associated with shading, loss or modification of fish and bottom habitat, changes in hydrodynamics, and issues associated with a planned marina. AKRF is also assisting in procuring the necessary federal, state and local permits and approvals required for this project.
