Waterfront Revitalization

Extending Manhattan’s Hudson River Park

AKRF’s specialists provided the essential environmental analyses, planning, and hazardous materials services necessary to create the 550 acre Hudson River Park, the largest park planned in New York City since the expansion of Riverside Park in the 1930s.

This five-mile stretch of prime waterfront was once lined with the remnants of industrial, warehouse, and shipping uses. Now, this previously underutilized waterfront has been transformed into a thriving recreational and commercial area that includes an esplanade, bikeway, and marine sanctuary, as well as facilities for fishing and boating, food concessions and restaurants, historic ships, museums, ball fields, dog runs, and playgrounds.

The rebirth of this waterfront has helped spur the revitalization of the West Side of Midtown Manhattan.
