AKRF will host a session at the 94th Annual Meeting of the New York State Archaeological Association April 23-25, 2010 in Ellenville, New York. The session, The South Ferry Terminal Project Site in Lower Manhattan: Battery Park’s Original Battery and the Discovery of Whitehall Slip, has been organized by Diane Dallal, Director of Archaeology at AKRF. Seven speakers, including Dallal and AKRF Senior Archaeologist Molly McDonald, will participate.
The session will focus on the work done after archaeologists, monitoring construction of the new South Ferry Terminal subway station for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), discovered a mid-eighteenth century Battery Wall built during the French and Indian War and the old Whitehall Slip constructed in 1734/35. Both were determined eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The Wall, partially demolished c.1790, supported artillery that protected the city from invasion and ultimately gave Battery Park its name. A Cultural Resources Team led by AKRF with URS and Linda Stone, as subconsultants, has conducted intensive research and analysis and will report on the results.
