Construction Approved for Raritan River Bridge Replacement

The NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors recently approved the initial construction contract for replacement of the Raritan River Bridge, a 112-year-old swing bridge over the Raritan River between Perth Amboy and South Amboy. The existing bridge required emergency repairs after Superstorm Sandy before reopening for passenger rail service, and its replacement is part of NJ TRANSIT’s Resilience Program. AKRF, in partnership with BEM Systems, led preparation of the Environmental Assessment and Section 4(f) Evaluation pursuant to NEPA, and obtained the USACE and NJDEP permits for the project to proceed.
