As part of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Atlantic Yards Arena and Redevelopment Project, AKRF analyzed potential operational noise impacts and potential noise and vibration impacts due to the construction of this ambitious land use initiative in Brooklyn, New York.

The project, overseen by the Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC), calls for the redevelopment of a 22-acre site in the Atlantic Terminal area of Brooklyn. The $4.5 million project includes a new arena for the Nets basketball team, along with mixed-income residential, commercial office, retail, hotel, and community facility uses.

The firm performed a noise measurement program to establish the ambient noise levels in the project study area for both the operational and construction noise analysis, as follows:

  • The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Traffic Noise Model (TNM) was used to predict noise levels due to project-generated traffic
  • The CadnaA model was used to assess the location and duration of noise impacts throughout the 10-year construction program
  • Extensive site-specific mitigation measures, including source, path, and receiver controls, were recommended to eliminate or reduce the construction-period noise impacts
