AKRF provided acoustical consulting services to help create a suitable environment for students at the proposed Beacon High School, a new performing arts high school for the New York City School Construction Authority (NYCSCA).

The proposed 232,000-gross-square-foot school will include classrooms, chorus/music rooms, recording rooms, cafeteria, auxiliary gym space and a gymnasium, library, science labs and an auditorium.

As the project acoustical consultant, AKRF:

  • Performed a detailed noise survey to determine acoustical performance requirements for the building’s façade
  • Examined environmental noise associated with mechanical equipment for purposes of New York City Noise Control Code (Section §24-227) and Mechanical Code (Section MC 926) compliance
  • Analyzed proposed mechanical systems and vibration isolation specifications, and provided recommendations to achieve design criteria within interior noise critical spaces
  • Reviewed partitions and provided recommendations to achieve necessary acoustical separation between adjacent interior spaces to maintain speech privacy levels
  • Detailed interior finishes required to maintain reverberation time levels
  • Provided acoustical design recommendations for the isolation of special spaces such as choral, instrumental music, exercise/dance/weight training, black box theater, gymnasium, and theater rooms
