Memorial Sloan-Kettering and CUNY-Hunter College
AKRF prepared the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for this major initiative combining health care, education, and scientific research.
Memorial Sloan-Kettering (MSK) and CUNY-Hunter College partnered to respond to a New York City Economic Development Corporation Request for proposals for an approximately 66,000 square foot lot located between East 73rd and 74th Streets along the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Drive.
As part of the EIS for this complex 1.1 million-gross square foot development, AKRF prepared a climate change analysis addressing both mitigation and adaptation.
The mitigation analysis provided detailed estimates of greenhouse gas emissions associated with construction and operation of the facilities, and the potential for reducing those emissions by applying energy efficiency, design, transportation, and construction measures.
The adaptation analysis, which came under extra scrutiny due to the timing of the project occurring soon after Hurricane Sandy, reviewed the detailed design elements of the project in conjunction with current and projected future severe storm flooding conditions, identifying design measures for avoiding flooding, protecting critical infrastructure, and ensuring that hazardous materials would not find their way into flood waters in the event of severe flooding.
