Private Owner

AKRF was retained by a private homeowner to provide geotechnical and site/civil engineering services in support of the proposed renovation of two existing and contiguous townhouses located in New York City’s Greenwich Village Historic District.

The proposed development involves the renovation and reconfiguration of the interior of the building, including lowering the existing cellar floor. A new addition with one below-grade level is proposed to be constructed at the rear of the existing buildings.

The subsurface exploration required the use of a specialist subcontractor using a restricted access drilling equipment to advance the geotechnical boring within the rear yard of the property. Our exploration also included the excavation of test pits within the existing building, and adjacent to the neighboring buildings, to observe the existing foundation type and bearing stratum of the foundations. AKRF’s geotechnical engineers provided full-time Special Inspection of the subsurface exploration.

AKRF developed recommendations for the design and construction of new foundations, as well as support of excavation and underpinning systems to facilitate foundation construction. Our team also contributed design and detail drawings for these systems for submission to the New York City Department of Buildings.

Our geotechnical engineering services for this project included:

  • NYCT approval
  • Subsurface exploration
  • Foundation analysis and design
  • Support of excavation
  • Underpinning
  • Special Inspections
