Orange County Traffic and Land Use Study
Orange County, NY
New York Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and Orange County, NY
AKRF led the public outreach effort for the Orange County Traffic and Land Use Study which examined transportation improvement opportunities on a regional basis and integrated recommendations for sound land use planning.
For this project, the public outreach process included several community stakeholder visioning sessions, a survey mailed to nearly 1,000 individuals, and development of a project website on which updated information, meeting notices, and project results were posted.
AKRF developed and analyzed four different land use scenarios working collaboratively with the Orange County Department of Planning, the New York State Department of Transportation, the New York State Thruway Authority, Metro-North Railroad, and the municipalities that comprise the study area. These scenarios were based on potential future zoning and traffic conditions and were developed to illustrate advantages to mixed-use village-centered development.
The Orange County Traffic and Land Use Study, with its substantial public input component, will continue to influence transportation investment decisions and provide opportunities to plan for and sustain the high quality of life currently enjoyed in the communities participating in the study.
