AKRF has provided environmental services to NYCEDC and its development partners for redevelopment of the historic and long-underutilized Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx.

The Kingsbridge Armory opened in 1917 and was used by the United States military until 1994 before reverting to city ownership in 1996. The Armory was designated as a New York City Landmark in 1974 and listed on the New York State and National Registers of Historical Places in 1982.

AKRF prepared the CEQR Environmental Impact Statement for redevelopment of the Armory as El Centro Kingsbridge. Key technical analyses prepared by AKRF included historic and cultural resources, hazardous materials, air quality, noise, and construction. A Notice of Completion for the FEIS was issued under by the Mayor’s Office of Environmental Coordination in 2025, and the New York City Council approved the project in 2025 as well.

The redevelopment project will transform the 180,000-square-foot building into a mixed-use hub with community facility and cultural space, light manufacturing space, commercial office space, a 17,000-person capacity live event venue, and other entertainment uses.

On an adjacent site the project will also include the development of a new residential building containing 500 permanently affordable units and ground floor retail. In addition, new, publicly accessible open space would be created as part of the project.

Supporting the Vision Plan

AKRF also provided civil engineering and site assessment/remediation services on behalf of NYCEDC for the Together for Kingsbridge Vision Plan.
