Public Transit

AKRF is a recognized leader for National Environmental Policy Act analysis and documentation as well as comparable state and local requirements for public transit projects. In New York City we have prepared Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements for major rail, bus, and ferry systems and services, including Second Avenue Subway, LIRR East Side Access, LIRR Main Line Expansion, Flushing Line No. 7 Train to Hudson Yards, NYC Citywide Ferry, the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, and more.

The first phase of the Second Avenue Subway, which opened in 2017 as New York City’s largest expansion of the subway system in 50 years, was named “Best of the Best” for national transit projects by Engineering News-Record. Other projects have included replacement of critical rail bridges like the Portal Bridge and Raritan River Bridge as well as the Route 440 extension of Hudson-Bergen Light Rail.

We also serve the needs of our public transit clients outside the New York and New Jersey area, including on-call environmental services for the Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority, the Amherst Metro Rail Extension in Buffalo, NY, Atlanta Multi-Modal Passenger Terminal in Atlanta, GA, and Amtrak rail bridge replacements in Connecticut and Maryland.
