AKRF is leading the design of a 'Shared Street' project along East 43rd Street in Manhattan.

Our work includes civil and geotechnical engineering services on behalf of the New York City Department of Design and Construction for a raised intersection and sidewalk widening that will improve pedestrian safety and prioritize pedestrian activity near Grand Central Terminal.

Due to the highly congested utility corridor along Lexington Avenue, we are working with Con Edison and Empire City Subway to identify existing infrastructure to minimize utility relocations while achieving design intent and to minimize construction durations and impacts on the community.

Our work also includes the preparation of a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan with post-construction stormwater management practices and a Tree Inventory Report.

We coordinated with our landscape design subconsultant and the Grand Central Business Improvement District to facilitate Public Design Commission approval on urban design and streetscape improvements.

Extensive coordination with MTA was also needed given the subway line below Lexington Avenue and relocation of bollards in front of the 43rd Street entrance at Grand Central.

We developed unique construction staging and maintenance and protection of traffic plans to minimize traffic disruption and allow long-term lane closures along Lexington Avenue to facilitate construction of the raised intersection. AKRF also coordinated with NYCDOT, NYPD, and the Mayor’s Office on the placement of additional bollards for pedestrian safety.
