Pittsburgh Flood Mitigation Planning
AKRF is modeling flooding conditions and flood mitigation strategies in Pittsburgh's Negley Run watershed.
Negley Run was identified in the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority’s Strategic Plan for Stormwater as a priority watershed due to historic flooding that has resulted in damage and loss of life; vulnerability of neighborhoods within the watershed, such as Homewood, to reoccurring flooding; and opportunities for flood mitigation including availability of vacant and publicly owned land.
Our work for the watershed is addressing a new river outfall, constructed wetland systems, regenerative step pool conveyance systems, roadway elevation in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, sewer separation, and parallel storm relief sewers.
In a separate assignment, AKRF is leading the final design of a neighborhood-scale stormwater management and drainage improvement project to mitigate flooding issues impacting roadways and private properties in the Carrick neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
