Willis Avenue Bridge Replacement
In 2010, the Willis Avenue Bridge was replaced to increase lane width, address structural concerns, and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
AKRF provided the New York City Department of Transportation with environmental review, environmental planning, traffic and civil engineering, and construction support services for the $600 million project connecting East Harlem and the Bronx.
Our team was the lead consultant in preparing the SEQRA/NEPA Environmental Impact Statement. Key technical studies in the EIS included transportation, water quality, natural resources, Section 4(f) Assessment, Essential Fish Habitat assessment, air quality, noise, historic and archaeological resources, and hazardous materials.
The project required ULURP mapping in both Manhattan and the Bronx to accommodate the new alignment for the 350-foot-long bridge. AKRF also led the public engagement effort, which involved public scoping meetings, community information meetings, and public hearings for the EIS.
Civil engineering and construction support services
AKRF was responsible for the civil design of at-grade work including drainage and Maintenance and Protection of Traffic plans for the multi-phase construction schedule. Our team performed construction support services through site visits to address changes or adjustments from construction activities and complex phasing plans.
Construction activities for the new bridge began in 2008 and were completed in 2013.
