Brookville Boulevard Flood Mitigation Study
Brookville Boulevard in Queens is highly vulnerable to disruptive flooding from coastal storms and regular high tides.
AKRF is working with the New York City Department of Transportation to mitigate current and future flooding on a 4,300-foot-long segment of the roadway between 149th Avenue and Rockaway Boulevard in Queens, NY.
The local moniker “Snake Road” is due to the segment’s meandering path through the tidal wetland of Idlewild salt marsh, between NYC Parks’ Idlewild and Hook Creek Parks. Our work is also evaluating how to mitigate the road’s impact on the marsh.

Solutions and Engagement
AKRF is exploring alternatives to the road that include flood mitigations strategies such as potential raising of grade along with roadway safety improvements.
Given the environmentally sensitive location, the project includes associated wetland mitigation strategies that would ameliorate or at least not exacerbate these conditions, a potentially important co-benefit of this hazard mitigation project.
We are also presenting the project at public workshops and produced presentation boards illustrating conceptual design alternatives, including a shared-use path for cyclists and pedestrians.
