The reconstructed Rockaway Boardwalk reopened in 2017 after damage incurred during Superstorm Sandy closed the facility to the public.

Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery funds were allocated by HUD for the project, which raised the 5.5-mile boardwalk above the 100-year floodplain. The 40-foot-wide boardwalk includes a shared-use path for cyclists and pedestrians.

Over four miles of retaining walls and a system of planted dunes further enhances its resiliency, making the boardwalk able to withstand storm and tidal forces that will impact the coastline in future years.

Design of the reconstructed boardwalk was led by WXY.

Environmental Planning & Permitting

AKRF prepared the project’s NEPA, SEQRA, and CEQR environmental documents and provided permitting support as part of the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s consultant team.

Our work included preparing the Joint Application for Permit under the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation tidal wetlands and coastal erosion management regulations for the boardwalk’s construction.

Ecological & Biological Assessments

Our natural resources assessment included threatened and endangered plant species surveys and vegetation and ecological community characterizations.

We also performed field surveys of wildlife in Far Rockaway and prepared the Endangered Species Act Section 7 Biological Evaluation that involved extensive coordination, communication, and cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
