AKRF is providing National Grid with environmental review in support of the issuance of a State Pollution Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) permit for E. F. Barrett Generating Station in Hempstead, NY. The station consists of two steam electric generating units with a combined generating capacity of approximately 370 MW. In addition, 12 combustion turbine peaking units are also located on the station property.

To date, AKRF has prepared the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) scoping document for project and Preliminary Draft Environmental Impact Statement (PDEIS), which evaluated alternative facility cooling technologies and operational measures associated with the station's steam electric generating units.

The PDEIS is currently under review by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
